Kenya Ports Authority has explained the recent slow clearance of cargo at the port of Mombasa which has resulted in delays and hefty costs to importers and exporters. The Authority attributed the delays to a three day go-slow by gantry crane operators in March, an unprecedented bunching of between three to four vessel arrivals in April and May against a limited berthing capacity, frequent breakdown of KRA’s CAMIS and SIMBA systems, breakdown of RMG 4 for three months and a weighbridge which was erected between Gate 18 and Changamwe by KeNHA. However, the weighbridge has since been withdrawn.
A stakeholders meeting, chaired by the Minister for Transport Hon. Amos Kimunya, was held on Monday 6th June 2011 at KPA headquarters to discuss pertinent issues that have been plaguing shippers and service providers alike. Key issues under deliberation were CFS administration, issuance of container damage interchanges, vessel berthing delays, yard congestion, systems breakdowns, challenges in interfacing KWATOS and SIMBA systems among others. The outcome of deliberations will be posted on our website in due course.
