KPA to CFSs: Stop levying Verification Charges

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has instructed Container Freight Stations (CFSs) to stop levying verification charges. In a communiqué sent to service providers and copied to Kenya Shippers Council, the Authority’s Chief Operations Manager, Eng. Joseph Atonga expressed disappointment with the unilateral decision by CFS to go against a KPA directive, as the nominating agency, not to levy verification charges.

He further noted that that KPA gave all CFSs rebates in January 2011 to cover their costs of transfer and other expenses incurred at their yards. Eng. Atonga termed the decision to levy the verification charges as totally unacceptable and “MUST be stopped immediately failure to which KPA will cease nominating cargo to those CFSs and deal with the resultant container congestion from within”.
