Serious security concerns have been raised over insecurity along the northern corridor. This was raised when a container loaded with coffee was stolen and the truck abandoned in Naivasha. Investigations discovered that the thieves tampered with the fleet management tracking system which aids in tracking trucks in transit. Coast provincial police chief Aggrey Adoli is suspecting that it was an inside job.
Transporters have in the recent past continuously raised concerns over the raising security concerns. In different incident, a truck driver was shot dead between Bachuma and Mackinon. Insecurity is hinged on hijackings that have become rampant in the recent past.
The security complaints are culminated with delays in cargo verification at the Malaba border. Transporters claim that it is taking more than seven days to clear their goods and cross the border. The delays have been associated with the slow processing of documents on the Ugandan border side which does not operate 24 hours like the Kenyan border. Uganda and Kenya authorities are planning on improving this process by implementing a one-stop border post initiative which will drastically reduce the clearing period from days to a couple of hours.
