In an attempt to address the recurring port congestion which has reached alarming levels since December 2011, the Government recently launched a Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) at the Port of Mombasa. While this move is highly welcome, KSC is of the opinion that a number of long term measures need to be put in place in order to permanently address this issue. In the short tem, however, measures must be put in place to ensure that the current RRI initiative remains sustainable.
Such measures can only be effectively undertaken to yield positive results if the root cause of the problem is identified and addressed. The Kenya Shippers Council and its partners in both public and private have carried out a study/research over the last few days to investigate and identify the root causes and nature of the problem of Port Congestions and long stay containers.
In order to fast track ongoing measures, KSC will be holding a competitive forum to discuss the root causes of congestion at the port, identify possible policy interventions and clearly state what both the Government and the private sector needs to sustain the RRI initiative among others long term measures.
