Kenya Shippers Council is a business membership organization whose key mandate is to advocate for the interests of importers and exporters in the region on policy and operational issues in transport and logistics. In addition, the Council is establishing itself as a one-stop centre for all documentation on policies, regulations and procedures for trade within Kenya and the larger East Africa region. In addition, KSC is a key stakeholder in the Kenyan National Single Window initiative as convener of the National Stakeholders Forum. It is in this line that KSC has developed and E-Portal which is a database of information on import and export rules, regulations and procedures.
TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) is working towards establishing systems for Single Window (SW) and Integrated Border Management (IBM) in the EAC region and a key aspect in this regard is the collection and dissemination of information on policies, regulations and procedures for trade. The SW and IBM will also provide online systems for applications of various trading licenses and submission of trade documents to the various government agencies by the shippers and traders.
It is in this regard that the KSC has partnered with TMEA in the development of an online, web-based platform for the hosting of trading documentation to be undertaken as part of the TMEA’s SW and IBM initiatives.
The approach identified several value chains and then to identify the rules, regulations and procedures for the same. These value chains are considered to be among the most imported / exported products. KSC conducted a mapping exercise for collecting the information and disseminate it through the web platform.
Current value chains in the system inculde;
Uganda – Exports include Tea, Coffee, Cotton, fish while imports looked at Pyrethrum and drugs
